On November 25th 2006, the famous Déjeuner Cosmopolitain in Laval burned to the ground. The upset was clearly evident. It was all over the internet. Strangers talking to one another, consoling each other, trying to find out the fate of their favorite breakfast spot. Would well known restaurateur/owner Epaminondas (Nondas) Rekatsinas re-open? Was it gone forever? This is what they were saying….

“Someone, anyone out there who knows anything about the future/fate of Déjeuner Cosmo, please let us all know. Pretty sad--driving by and all you see is... ashes (weep, weep).”

“Does anyone have the scoop on that amazing Laval breakfast mecca, Déjeuner Cosmopolitain?”

“I'm very excited to report that a friend of mine has spotted what looks like the same Déjeuner Cosmopolitain sign out near Fairview in Pointe-Claire!“

It’s true…

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Déjeuner Cosmopolitain is back and in true form. In July 2007, they opened their doors in a new location in the West Island and I simply had to go to find out what all the fuss was about.

I sat with owner Nondas, as he is affectionately called by his staff, while he introduced me to many of the tantalizing gems on his menu. He described to me his humble beginnings on a small island in Greece, his philosophy of life, and his philosophy behind his restaurant. He is an astonishing and well educated man with a purpose. His aim in launching Déjeuner Cosmopolitain, was not only to create a profitable business, but to produce a culinary revolution serving only healthy, real homemade food, confirming that the respect and the health of the customer was of paramount concern to him. He believes he has a moral obligation and social responsibility to help his patrons, his city, his society, and his world. He lives his life with passion. This passion and purpose are translated into the kind of service and product he provides in his restaurant. His philosophies are seen in everything from the elegant décor and cleanliness, to the impeccable and friendly service of his staff. I discovered that a number of his employees have been by his side for many, many years. I have never met a man dedicated to such excellence.

Déjeuner Cosmopolitain is an extraordinary, upscale all day breakfast and lunch restaurant. It has become a landmark in the Montreal area for the eclectic and health conscious individual. There are no preservatives, no trans-fat, and no chemicals in anything that is served. Everything is guaranteed fresh and is of only the most superior quality. They strive to meet with your satisfaction 120%.

The bagels, including whole wheat, spelt or white “organic” bagels come from the famous “Fairmount Bagel factory” in Montreal. You have a choice of several different breads, including apple, raisin, rye, Cantors whole wheat and white. The orange juice is freshly squeezed one at a time, using only the best in Sunkist oranges and even the water and ice cubes are filtered. The cereals are organic, and the bread is made exclusively for Déjeuner Cosmopolitain by the well known Cantors Bakery.

The breakfast here is outstanding. If you can imagine it, it’s on the menu. If its eggs you crave, you will find only omega 3 eggs are served here, and the assortment is endless. Choose from 22 different kinds of omelets, or indulge in the world’s biggest selection of exceptional Eggs Benedict. You may want to enjoy the Classic Eggs Benedict with hollandaise sauce or for the more adventurous, indulge in The Mediterranean made with only the freshest and most delicious vine ripened tomatoes, onions, oregano and feta cheese. It is pure perfection

The fruit (both fresh and tropical) are shipped in from all over the world. Enjoy it straight from the platter or experience one of their many fabulous creations which are both a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Imagine warm pancakes (choice of spelt, buckwheat, whole wheat or white) bursting with plump fresh blueberries, drizzled with royal hazelnut chocolate; the Nutti-Frutti might be more to your taste, with a mountain of exotic fruits, sprinkled with walnuts, almonds and raisins.

Or try a fresh Berry Blast. A flurry of low fat yogurt topped with your choice of fresh berries and muslix, served with hot apple bread toast, all delicious.

A particularly noteworthy dish is the Strawberry Delight Crepe. Fresh strawberries blanketed in their famous crème anglais, in a thin homemade crepe. The crème anglais is made with natural cream and is smooth and sweet and it complimented the crepe perfectly, enveloping each mouth watering morsel.

Most of the hot breakfast dishes are served with Déjeuner Cosmopolitain’s famous homemade potatoes. They looked very unassuming on my plate, a little like mashed, until that first bite. My taste buds were on overload. Without question the homemade potatoes are a must try. They will even modify their famous breakfast potatoes and serve them without spices or onion to please customers with special needs. In fact Nondas prides himself on being able to cater to special needs as well as vegetarian and cultural diets.

Déjeuner Cosmopolitain also offers exceptional business luncheons. The menu includes a large variety of crispy salads, homemade snack burgers, juicy steaks grilled to perfection, pasta plates, succulent seafood dishes as well as a large selection of vegetarian delights. They have a full liquor license with a fascinating selection of ice cream cocktails and specialty coffees to compliment your meal.

Déjeuner Cosmopolitain is clearly the world’s most superior breakfast and lunch restaurant committed to excellence and guaranteed to deliver everything they promise. They serve what you want, how you want it, even if it’s not on the menu! Now I understand what all the fuss is about. See you there!
